Member governance

Forums where moderators are elected, not self-appointed

The biggest problem with online forums isn't the trolls, it's the mods. One person with a grudge can delete years of work, and nobody can stop them. duxb is built so that can't happen: communities belong to their members, and the people who run them answer to the members.

Elected stewards

The founder is only the first steward. Active members can nominate themselves and members vote. Any steward, founder included, can be recalled by a member vote.

Nothing happens in the dark

Every removal and every ban needs a written reason and appears in the community's public log. Anyone can read it, including people who aren't members.

Decisions can be reversed

If a steward removes your post or bans you, you can appeal to the members. They vote, and if they agree with you, the post comes back or the ban is lifted. Bans from stewards are always temporary.

Protected against takeovers

To vote, an account must be a few days old and have been a member of the community for a while. A crowd of new accounts can't walk in and seize a community, and inactive stewards step down automatically.

Questions

Can site admins overrule a community?

Only for spam, illegal content and breaches of the site rules, and those actions are logged publicly too.

How long do votes take?

A few days, so that members in every time zone can take part. The exact numbers are on the Rules page.

What if a community has only one steward?

That's fine while it's small. As it grows, members can elect more, and the founder can't block it.

Ready?

It takes a minute, and it's free.
